Purpose Statement

The Clarendon College Library Off-Campus Library Services (OCLS) is your immediate access to academic information and research needs. Our purpose is to assist you in the information literacy process so that you can access and evaluate print and non-print resources.  Located in the Vera Dial Dickey Library at Clarendon College, Clarendon, Texas, the OCLS department is available to all Clarendon College faculty and students regardless of location.

Mission Statement

It is the Mission of the Clarendon College Vera Dial Dickey Library's Off-Campus Library Services Department to meet the teaching, educational, research, and informational needs of all Clarendon College students, faculty, administration and staff regardless of location by providing appropriate library resources and services.

Off-Campus Services 

Students enrolled in courses offered by Clarendon College (regardless of location) are encouraged to make effective use of the library services and resources.  The library has established cooperative agreements within each community in which a course is taught to provide adequate library services and resources to assist you in your college research and assignments. To supplement these services and further meet your academic needs, the library provides the following services:

 

Requestor will receive a confirmation notice when the request has been received.

Allow a minimum of 24 - 48 hours when making your request.

All requests will be answered and/or responded to within 48 hours of its receipt.

Interlibrary Loan Service

Off-campus library users are encouraged to checkout materials from the college library, and request materials not found in the college library by using Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  Books and magazine articles may be requested from other libraries and mailed to the main campus at no charge.

 

Library Instruction - Faculty and students may request group or individual library instruction sessions at any time throughout the semester.

Tip of the Week: Study Skill Checklist

Free Database Trials - From time to time the library solicits input from students and faculty regarding their opinion of databases the library is considering for purchase.  The library will notify all students and faculty via the college e-mail and flyers.

 

Harrington Library Consortium - The Clarendon College Library is a member of the Harrington Library Consortium (HLC).  HLC is a group of 75 Texas Panhandle public, private, academic, and school libraries who share resources and services and a collection of more than 1 million items.  If you have a library card at one of the HLC Libraries, you may borrow items from other HLC libraries using your card. You must be in good standing with your home library before you can borrow materials from another library.

Off-Campus Cooperative Agreements - Off-Campus Cooperative agreements have been established and are in effect with the academic and public libraries in your area.  In the event the public libraries are not able to provide the proper services and resources you need for your college courses, please notify the Clarendon College Library staff.

Faculty Orientation

 

The Off-Campus Librarian is available to assist faculty with use of library services and resources and facilitate orientations and workshops through formal and informal library instruction sessions.  Please call the library to make arrangements.

 

Library Instruction

 

If your students will be doing research projects, we can help by providing formal and informal instructional session tailored to your specific assignment.  Instruction can take place at your off-campus location or at the Clarendon campus library.  At least 1-week notice is required for scheduling.  Contact the librarian at 806-874-4815 or 800-687-9737 ext. 118 to make arrangements.

 

Faculty Reserve

Clarendon College Library (or your own personal) materials may be placed on reserve for your studentsÕ to use.  Please contact the librarian to make arrangements to place materials on reserve at the appropriate location for your students.

 

Online Catalog

 

The on-line catalog is a shared consortia database that consists of over 75 academic, public and school libraries in the Texas Panhandle providing over one million titles through the Harrington Library Consortium (HLC) http://www.hlc-lib.org.  Library users are able to view the collections of others libraries and request material not found in the college library through interlibrary loan. 

 

The catalog may be searched using author, title, subject, periodical title, and words or phrase.  The catalog has the ability to search all of the libraries in the consortia or one particular library, once you have entered your search term(s), the computer will automatically generate a list of related titles for further research.   The catalog can be accessed from any computer (on or off-campus, office or home).

OED (Oxford English Dictionary) The OED covers words from across the English-speaking world, from North America to South Africa, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean. It also offers the best in etymological analysis and in listing of variant spellings, and it shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Texshare Ð The TexShare Database Program provides a wealth of electronic database resources to over 700 public, academic, and libraries of clinical medicine throughout the state at a significant cost savings. These electronic databases are powerful research tools available 24 hours a day in the homes or offices of registered patrons of participating Texas libraries. They provide full-text articles from encyclopedias, almanacs, journals and newspapers. Entire books can even be read while on-line. Database topics include homework help for students, health information, business information, biography and genealogy, as well as literature and archival information.

 

Netlibrary  (27,000 eBooks), Student Resource Center GOLD , Info Trac Custom Newspapers, Literature Resource Center (Gale), Texas Digital Sanborn Maps, Funk and WagnallÕs New Encyclopedia  and much more.

HLC (Harrington Library Consortium) HLC is a computerized cooperative library network established to assist in meeting informational needs. How to Check Out Materials & Other Circulation Procedures

 

Library Card Ð Faculty are encourage to apply for a Clarendon College library card during faculty in-service.  Cards are accepted at all participating Harrington Library Consortium (HLC) libraries, and must be presented at time of check out.

 

Checkout Procedures ÐFaculty MUST present library card in order to checkout materials.  There is no limit to the number of items that can be checked out. 

 

Loan Periods Ð Materials and equipment may be checked out for two-weeks or for the semester.  Semester checkouts may be recalled.  All materials and equipment are due one (1) week prior to the end of the semester.

 

Return Procedures Ð All items checked out must be returned to the main campus on or before the due date.  A book return is located at the circulation in the library.  Materials checked out by you from other libraries must be returned directly to that library.   

 

Renewals - Renewals are available upon request, and may be renewed in person or by calling 806-874-4815 or 800-687-9737 ext. 118. 

 

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Delivery of Materials

 

Materials not available in the Clarendon College Library may be requested through interlibrary loan by filling out an Interlibrary Loan Request Form available from your instructor. 

á      Depending on the format of your request, it may be delivered to your off-campus location via in-house courier, general mail, fax, or you may pick it up at the main campus.

á      If the item(s) you requested are checked out, it may take two (2) weeks or more for your request to arrive.  Please allow plenty of time for your deadline.

á      To ensure proper check-in and return of material to lending library, return all interlibrary materials to the Clarendon College Library.   

á      In order to prevent a late fee from the lending library, contact the library at least one (1) week or more before the due date at 806-874-4815 or 800-687-9737 ext. 118.    NOTE:  The lending library may or may not give approval for renewal.   

 

Interlibrary loans returned to the Clarendon College Library by mail must be mailed in padded bags; ordinary envelopes do not provide adequate protection.

 

 

Collection Development

 

Faculty is encouraged to make suggestions for materials for the library collection.  Our priority is to purchase materials that support the curriculum, which is why your input is essential.  To make a request contact the librarian at 806-874-4815 or 800-687-9737 ext. 118.
